Project Report | Jul 10, 2019
THE THIRD QUARTER of 2019

By Brian Kimanthi | Project Leader

Dear Supporters,

The third quarter of the above mentioned project began on the first of July, barely a month to the end of the second academic term of 2018. It started well with all the pupils and the workers reporting back on the right time.

Despite the high prices of the basic commodities such as food, fuel and stationery, we could squeeze ourselves well and made all workable. The feeding program and the other undertakings in the school project have been going on well throughout the quarterly term, with the feeding program under one of the Gvi-Mombasa ex-volunteers attached to the school.

We too have been able to change the school uniform, a change that every party concerned was so pleased with and we could secure it’s sponsorship by one of the school friends. We opted to change it since because the previous one could not match with environment within the compound as it is dusty ground. The new uniforms are more beautiful, attractive and easier to identify the pupils from a distance. However, we officially adopt the new uniforms in the new year.

Due to a change of our new school curriculum, there emerged a new demand for new textbooks so we can move with our new system of education. We therefore received donation funds from one of our former volunteers so we could purchase some of the new textbooks needed and we managed to buy enough for the first six lower classes, that is, from kindergarten one to grade three.

The school now look more beautiful, attractive and more child friendly. This is because we spent most of our August holidays painting the school afresh and some art work for decoration, educational and for identity. This was under the sponsorship of one of the Gvi ex-volunteers in Mombasa. Besides the painting and the art work, we did all the repairs to the temporary structures as well as cementing two classes, grades three and four, and the corridor in between the two temporary classes lines under the sponsorship of Gvi-CT.

Feeding the children being one of the main purposes of the project, we spent the whole of the August holidays feeding them, a practise we have carried on for years, where the children come in the school, have their breakfast, play some games, eat their lunch meal then leave for their homes in the afternoon.

Over the August holidays, we held a community free medical camp and a hygiene clinic where in the medical camp, members of the community were tested and treated accordingly. The hygiene clinic saw every pupil receive toothpaste and a toothbrush.

However, as it is with all the other aspects of life, we are faced with challenges such inadequate stationery, school uniforms and inadequate funds to pay for the salaries more so during the holiday months.

With Grattitude,

Nyota School
