By Timothy Frey, MD | Project Leader
Our Mayan midwife nursing student, Celia, continues to make strong progress through her formal university nursing program. She has moved from classroom work to almost exclusively clinical work as she enters the final year of her three year program in January. Her recent rotations have included Obstetrics with post-partum and peri-natal pediatric care. In addition, she and her classmates have been part of a community public health outreach program administering Covid vaccines. In hard hit Guatemala, the population is desperate for any available vaccine.
Celia continues to work weekends in the birthing center as a midwife. She is very grateful for the support she has received and looks forward to being able to return, after graduation next year, to full time work in the birthing center as the first midwife also formally trained as an RN. Our hope is to be able to train at least one more midwife/RN after Celia finished her program.
A heartfelt thankyou to all who have contributed thus far to Celia's education and raising the professional recognition of the indigenous midewives of ACAM.
