FUEL THE FUTURE Marking 10 Years of EOW

Bellevue City Hall shimmered with color on the evening of December 12, as the Fuel The Future celebration unfolded in honor of Sukarya USA’s 10th anniversary and its beloved Education on Wheels program. Bright banners, Holiday Lighting, Lion Dance, Martial Arts Performance, and the warm hum of community voices filled the grand atrium, transforming it into a tapestry of cultures and shared purpose.

Guests arrived in a steady stream—families, volunteers, longtime supporters, and newcomers drawn by the promise of impact. Bellevue City Council Members mingled with prominent leaders from the local Asian community, their presence signaling a powerful unity behind Sukarya’s mission. Conversations sparked easily, fueled by stories of children whose lives had been changed by the mobile classrooms rolling through underserved neighborhoods in India.

As the program began, the room quieted. A short film played, showing children climbing aboard the bright yellow buses, their faces lit with curiosity and hope. When the lights rose, applause thundered through the hall.

Speakers stepped forward—council members, community leaders, and Sukarya champions—each sharing heartfelt reflections and issuing a collective call to action. The goal was ambitious yet urgent: raise enough funds to procure two new buses for the Education on Wheels fleet to serve the children living in the urban slums of Delhi and Haryana in India.

The “ask” was met with an energy that felt almost electric. Hands lifted, pledges flowed, and the atmosphere swelled with generosity. By the evening’s end, the hall glowed not just with color, but with the shared belief that education could—and would—reach every child who needed it.

Khushnuma's New Journey of Hope

Khushnuma, a 10yearold from a village in Bihar, lost her father at a young age. After his death, her relatives mistreated the family and eventually forced them out of their home. With no support, her mother moved the children to Delhi, where a friend offered them a small place to stay in Dalit Ekta Camp.

To survive, Khushnuma’s mother and older sisters began working in households, while Khushnuma cared for her younger siblings. Encouraged by her sisters, she enrolled in a nearby government school and also began studying on Sukarya’s Education on Wheels bus, where supportive teachers nurtured her love for learning.

Now in Class 4, Khushnuma enjoys school and continues to grow academically. Her journey shows how, even through hardship, education and encouragement can help a child build a brighter future.

Sahiba Begam, mother of Khushnuma says, "I’ve lived in Saraswati Kunj for over eight years. Seeing the Sukarya bus arrive each day fills me with joy. All three of my children have studied on this bus—two were later admitted to a village school, and this year, with the teachers’ support, my son joined a school in Wazirabad. I am truly grateful".
Watching the children learn with such focus is heartwarming, says Sahiba Begam. "The teachers teach with patience and care, offering not just academics but also guidance about life and values. This bus is more than a classroom—it is a source of knowledge, support, and hope for our community".

KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF THE QUARTER (July - September, 2025)

- A total of 319 students has been enrolled in the Education on Wheels (EOW) programme for
the academic year 2025–26.
- Three new locations were identified: Sector 69 in Gurgaon, Rangpuri Pahari, and Bengali
Market in Mahipalpur, Delhi.
- A total of five locations has been selected for the current academic year: Sector 69 and
Saraswati Kunj in Gurgaon, and Dalit Ekta Camp, Rangpuri Pahari, and Bengali Market in
Delhi.
- 52 students have been identified for the Open Basic Education (OBE) exam.
- 210 students have been successfully mainstreamed into formal schools.
- Teacher’s day were celebrated across all operational locations.
- Celebrated Independence Day celebrated with all students in all operational areas.
- OBE certificates distribution ceremony was conducted on 20 th September25
- Advocacy visits were conducted to government schools to facilitate the mainstreaming of
EOW students.
- Advocacy efforts were also undertaken with the Local Govt. Schools.
- Conducted Toilet use training session with all EOW students.

Rolling Hope: The Story of Sukarya’s Education on Wheels

In the urban slums of Delhi and Gurugram, where dreams often get buried under the weight of poverty and neglect, a brightly painted bus winds its way through dusty, narrow alleys. It’s not just any bus—it’s a classroom on wheels, a beacon of possibility, and the heart of Sukarya’s Education on Wheels (EOW) program.

A Classroom That Comes to the Doorstep:

For thousands of children living in urban slums, traditional schooling is a distant dream. Many are first-generation learners, some have dropped out, and others have never stepped into a classroom. Sukarya’s EOW flips the script. Instead of waiting for children to come to school, the school comes to them.

Each EOW bus is a fully equipped mobile classroom—with computers, TVs, books, and trained teachers. It parks in underserved neighborhoods, transforming streets into learning hubs. Inside and outside the bus, children gather in small batches, eager to learn, laugh, and grow.

More Than Just Literacy:

EOW isn’t just about ABCs and 123s. It’s about empowerment. Children receive:

Functional literacy and numeracy to prepare for formal schooling
Digital literacy to bridge the tech divide
Life skills training to build confidence and resilience
Health and hygiene education to promote well-being
Parental counseling to foster a supportive home environment

The goal? To mainstream these children into formal schools and give them a shot at a brighter future.

Impact That Speaks Volumes:

Since its inception in 2014, Sukarya’s EOW has educated over 3,000 children across six urban slums. More than 55% of these students have transitioned into formal schools—a testament to the program’s effectiveness.

Each child who boards the EOW bus carries a story of struggle. And each one who steps off with a book in hand and a smile on their face is a story of triumph.

A Ripple Effect:

Take Meena, for instance—a shy 10-year-old who had never held a pencil before joining EOW. Today, she’s not only reading fluently but also teaching her younger siblings. Or Raju, who dropped out of school to support his family. EOW helped him catch up, pass the Open Basic Examination, and re-enroll in school. These are not just stories—they’re revolutions in motion.

Behind the scenes, Sukarya’s dedicated team of educators, volunteers, and supporters—including Sukarya USA and Microsoft’s Giving through Benevity—keep the wheels turning. Their motto: “Go the extra mile to reach the unreached.”

Sukarya’s Education on Wheels isn’t just a program. It’s a movement. A movement that says no child should be left behind. That learning can happen anywhere. And that sometimes, all it takes to change a life is a bus full of hope.
