How Community Management of Water and Forests Strengthens Self-Governed Care of the Territory

Jolmoculjá, El Calvario, and Tim, Chiapas

What We Did:

In the communities of Jolmoculjá, El Calvario, and Tim in Chiapas, families came together to install rainwater harvesting systems (SCALL) with the technical and social support of Cooperación Comunitaria. These systems not only store clean water during the rainy season—they represent safety, health, and the certainty of having access to a vital resource even in times of drought. It is water that is born from the territory and stays in the territory, for the well-being of those who protect it.

How We Did It:

This was a deeply community-driven and transformative process. It was not simply about building infrastructure, but about strengthening collective voice and power. Through participatory workshops, community members reflected on water and forests as parts of the same living body that sustains their culture, food systems, and spirituality. Dialogue, participation, and community-led production ensured that each decision was made from the heart of the community, with a commitment to future generations.

Impact:

The knowledge gained through community water management brought more than just technology—it restored confidence and strengthened autonomy. Families now not only have permanent access to clean and safe water, but also possess the tools to face droughts with resilience. Through ecotechnologies and the creation of water management committees, the communities are advancing their own model of Comprehensive Risk Management rooted in their knowledge, their organization, and their identity. By caring for one another and for their territory, community self-governance is strengthened.

What People Say:

“If there is no water, there is no forest; if there is no forest, there is no water. They are connected.”
