Working with President's Village Children's Home

Getting kitted out for our weekly swim session
Getting kitted out for our weekly swim session

Dear Supporter,

Every Tuesday afternoon starts the same way. We load our van full of fins, masks, snorkels, floaties and the massive floating ring that is always a winning choice. We drive down to a nearby beach and eagerly wait for the children to arrive. A short while later the truck pulls up and out jump an excited group of about 10-15 kids, usually with smiles as wide as the big floating ring that is waiting for them in the water. The next hour and a half is spent splashing in the shallows for the young kids, or off adventuring on the reef with full snorkel gear for the older ones.

A few of the older children will practice their swim strokes, inevitably asking one of the volunteers to teach him or her a new one, while the young ones slowly get more comfortable in the water. A young girl who, six months ago, wouldn't step more than three feet into the ocean will now eagerly follow us into the deep water, just don't you dare let her go!

To continue to raise funds to support the kids at The President's Village, a number of fundraisers take place throughout the year. As you would have read about in our last update, in March our volunteers found themselves racing around northwestern Mahe island competing in tasks and challenges, both mental and physical, in a series of games based upon the TV series the Amazing Race. Most recently, our annual Raft Race for Rupees took over the bay. There were four Global Vision International teams and three represented by one of our partners, the Seychelles National Parks Authority (SNPA) racing on homemade rafts to a mooring buoy and back again. The SNPA teams might have been victorious this year (again), but just wait for next year! These funds will help us install a large set of solar panels at the Children's Home to provide clean and sustainable energy for a dorm building.

These funds will be put to use to help us install a large set of solar panels at the Children's Home. This will help to provide clean and sustainable energy for one of the dorm buildings at The President's Village.

Thank you for your continued and generous support.

All the best,

GVI Seychelles
