KalyeSkwela: Education Beyond the Streets

By Hazel Briones | Digital Engagement and Fundraising Associate

KALYESKWELA, 2026
KALYESKWELA, 2026

KalyeSkwela plays a vital role in addressing the educational exclusion experienced by children in street situations. Many of these children are unable to access formal schooling due to poverty, unstable living conditions, or the need to work for survival. As an alternative education and training center, KalyeSkwela provides a flexible and inclusive learning environment that responds to their realities, ensuring that education remains a right rather than a privilege.

Beyond basic literacy and numeracy, KalyeSkwela equips learners with life skills, values formation, and practical training essential for daily survival and long-term development. Its contextualized curriculum recognizes the diverse backgrounds and learning gaps of children in street situations, allowing them to progress at their own pace. This approach restores learners’ confidence, nurtures self-worth, and rebuilds their motivation to learn—key foundations for personal growth and social reintegration.

KalyeSkwela also serves as a critical bridge to formal education, vocational training, or sustainable employment. By preparing learners academically, socially, and emotionally, the program increases their chances of successfully transitioning to mainstream schools or skills-based training institutions. In doing so, it helps break the cycle of street life by opening pathways toward safer, more stable futures.

Ultimately, the importance of KalyeSkwela lies in its holistic and child-centered approach to education. It not only addresses learning gaps but also upholds the dignity, rights, and potential of every child. As an alternative education and training center, KalyeSkwela contributes significantly to social inclusion and nation-building by ensuring that no child is left behind, regardless of circumstance.
