At Orbis, we diligently fight to contribute to the reduction of avoidable blindness. As thought leaders in eye health care, our team is committed to ensure access to quality eye care, training and educating health care workers and communities and advocate for the right to sight. We recognise that girls and women have the right to sight and eye care treatment.
Unfortunately, women and girls face additional barriers to accessing eye care that men don't. 55% of people suffering from blindness are female and 70% of patients suffering from blinding trachoma are women. In rural Ethiopia women and girls face barriers in accessing medical treatment due to the long distances they have to travel. Meanwhile, they are most at risk of repeated infections as the primary caregiver for children who are most prone to infection.
Orbis is working hard to fix this gender imbalance and give women and girls access to the right to sight. We would like you to meet Tsehaynesh, mother of eight children who received Trachoma surgery from Orbis.
"Thanks to Orbis I can now see clearly again and live my life pain free".
