Emergency Earthquake Response in Mexico - Update #3

By Jaime | Head of Mission, Mexico

Nine months after the earthquake, many school students in affected areas are still unable to return to regular, full day classes or safe school environments. With the sheer level of damage to school buildings, reconstruction is expected to up to two years. While temporary classrooms are being installed, many of the new temporary school sites lack sufficient sanitation and hygiene facilities.

In response to these pressing needs, IsraAID has been providing temporary classrooms and sanitation facilities for schools. So far, IsraAID has implemented 492 classrooms throughout the state of Morelos. IsraAID's Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene team constructed 12 toilet units and 8 hand-washing stations in the temporary education facilities, rehabilitated an additional 14 handwashing stations, and distributed 59 classroom hygiene kits in additional schools.

New Hygiene & Sanitation Facilities in Santa Rosa Treinta

During the earthquake, this elementary school’s building completely collapsed. While the school community awaits a permanent solution, temporary classrooms have been installed nearby. However, a lack of sanitation facilities had rendered the temporary site unusable.

In the meantime, for 8 months, the school met for only 2 hours a day, from 3-5pm in a nearby high school.

With IsraAID’s support, 6 toilet units, a pathway, a new door, and a new office have been constructed.

IsraAID collaborated with the parents and staff of the school to choose the right design, ensuring the community was involved in every step of the process.

IsraAID’s WASH team held hygiene promotion workshops with each of the elementary classes, encouraging students to think and contribute to the discussion on how to create a healthy new school environment in their temporary school.

After the inauguration of the toilet units, the school was finally able to return to full day classes at the end of May, 2018.
