For 12 years, chimpanzees Mawa and Asega lived indoors, deprived of the sights and sounds of the wild. In late 2022, we finally completed a specialized high-security enclosure that gave them their first taste of freedom. That freedom is now under threat. On 01/31/2026, a massive storm battered Ngamba Island and the high-security fence standing 16.4 feet tall was compromised. The pressure was too much; the structure collapsed, and it is now leaning against our main perimeter fence.
The current high security fence enclosure was damage by a huge storm and while some trees were felled, the biggest damage was to a large section of the high security enclosure. Part of it was simply blown down. The collapse has compromised the primary sanctuary boundary, creating a high risk of escape and potential injury to the chimps and staff.
With the funding that will be received the fences will be restored hence mitigating the risks of escapes and also will help us restore safety to Ngamba Island so Mawa and Asega don't lose the life they only recently began to enjoy.
Improved chimpanzee welfare for all the 54 resident chimpanzees at Ngamba Island.
