Employment opportunities for 500 youth in Kilifi

The Employment Opportunities for 500 Youth in Kilifi project continues to create meaningful change by equipping young people with technical skills, connecting them to job opportunities, and fostering financial independence. Through the Mabati Technical Training Institute (MTTI) and strategic partnerships, the Safal MRM Foundation is addressing youth unemployment and empowering communities.

As we begin 2025, we take a moment to reflect on the progress made in 2024 and the impact we continue to create.

A Year of Progress 2024 at a Glance:

In 2024, Mabati Technical Training Institute enrolled 1,247 youth, marking a 70% growth in enrollment.

234 trainees were placed in industrial attachments across various sectors. 25 graduates secured full-time employment. 7 students gained industry experience through internships. 2 young entrepreneurs launched their businesses. 345 trainees successfully completed National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) exams, enhancing their employability. 594 boda boda riders trained in road safety, financial literacy, and business management, 27% of them being women. 100 riders acquired driving licenses, increasing their job security and road safety. 20 trainees sponsored in Light Vehicle Mechanics training, with 11 placed on attachment at AutoXpress branches.

Internships and Employment in 2025:

Building on the success of last year, we have already placed 60 trainees on industrial attachment across different organizations since January. These attachments are crucial in providing hands-on experience, bridging the gap between classroom learning and the job market.

Additionally, 11 trainees have secured full-time employment in various industries, demonstrating the growing impact of our vocational training and career placement efforts.

Our Career Services Office continues to connect students to employment opportunities, ensuring they have access to the right networks and support as they transition into the workforce.

We are excited to share the impactful progress of the “Employment Opportunities for 500 Youth in Kilifi” project. Mabati Technical Training Institute is dedicated to empowering young people through essential technical skills training, fostering financial independence, and contributing to economic growth. With a current enrollment of 1,247 trainees, MTTI embodies the commitment of the Safal MRM Foundation to bridge skill gaps and support vocational education.

Technical vocational skills are vital for economic stability in Kenya. MTTI provides a variety of training programs that enhance youth employability, equipping them to contribute significantly to the local economy and reduce poverty.

This year, 345 trainees completed the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) accreditation exams, earning recognized certifications that validate their skills and improve their employment prospects, ultimately strengthening Kenya’s skilled workforce.

MTTI’s “Elegant Spa” serves as both a training facility and an employment platform. Here, students gain hands-on experience in beauty services, allowing them to earn income while honing their skills in a real-world setting.

The Career Services Office at Mabati Technical Training Institute connects students with job placements and internships, 36 trainees have secured employment and an additional 160 are currently on industrial attachment. This initiative equips our trainees with relevant experience for the job market.

Through our collaboration with AutoXpress: a leading retailer and distributor of automotive products and services in Africa, 11 trainees are receiving specialized training in light vehicle mechanics, gaining valuable hands-on experience in the automotive sector that prepares them for sustainable careers, these trainees are also on industrial attachment.

Our partnership with Obuya Cricket Academy impacts the lives of sports-talented youth through educational sponsorships. This partnership continues to foster the potential of the youth, promoting discipline and community leadership.

The Boda Boda Rider Training program has empowered 594 young riders in Kilifi County, 27% being women. This initiative enhances financial independence and supports the local economy by providing essential skills and provisional driving licenses to the Kilifi County Youth.

At the recent “Boma Yangu” exhibition, MTTI proudly showcased our trainees’ talent in fields like electrical wiring, solar installation, welding, and plumbing. This event not only highlighted the role of MTTI in supporting affordable housing initiatives but also opened doors for students, connecting them with potential clients and employers. The exhibition reinforced our role in empowering youth for employment in the construction industry.

The MTTI Alumni Engagement event held on October 21st fostered mentorship and networking between past graduates and current trainees. With over 16,000 alumni, this community provides valuable insights into the job market and economic trends. Events like these empower current students, helping them make informed career choices and building a community rooted in shared growth and progress.
