Tiko has engaged 160 subsistence farmers with the TIKO Survival Package, enhancing year-round vegetable cultivation, promoting renewable energy through firewood stoves, and encouraging savings via pigeon and rabbit rearing. This initiative aims to offer affordable solutions to malnutrition and foster sustainable agricultural careers for youth.
Malnutrition in 160 households in Katete, exacerbated by overpopulation, illiteracy, unemployment, climate change & traditional beliefs, has been addressed. After 18 years of education, families recognize the benefits of backyard gardening, cost-effective cooking & livestock raising. Key challenges are providing ongoing support & clearly communicating the program's complexities, particularly regarding the creation of HOT 18 DAYS BERKELEY COMPOST as part of TOF TIKO Organic Fertilize.
Success requires regular inspections, emergency support and ongoing education. To supervise all 160 households and set up three new demonstration projects, we'll showcase GREEN vegetable rings at a nearby hospital and a village near the CHEWA Chief's palace. The Ceremonial Mother is interested, and farmers will follow her lead. We'll hold demos in Undi village and her farm, backed by inspections, counselling and engaging sessions.
Increasing numbers of subsistence farmers adopting the TIKO Survival Package can significantly reduce malnutrition by ensuring year-round vegetable availability. This initiative also provides young people-especially those who have dropped out of school or graduated but remain unemployed-with opportunities to engage in agricultural business. Many traditionally poor subsistence farming families will improve their livelihood considerably and the message will spread.
