This project transforms the lives of young girls in Mumbai and across India by providing life skills, education, football coaching plus health and hygiene support, sanitary materials, nutrition and exposure visits. It builds confidence, leadership and resilience, helping girls overcome social and economic barriers and empowering them to break the cycle of poverty and gender inequality. It inspires ambition, broadens horizons, shaping them into leaders of tomorrow.
Females from the slums of Mumbai and rural India that OSCAR serves face deep-rooted gender norms that limit their education. About 1 in 4 girls are married before 18 and only 49% of girls aged 15-17 attend secondary school. Enrolment falls sharply at higher levels due to early marriage, household responsibilities and economic pressures. These barriers deny them their rights to education, freedom and the opportunity to shape their own futures.
OSCAR Foundation's 'Kick Like a Girl' project advocates for gender equity in polarised low-income communities. It provides young girls with education in gender-based life skills. Through workshops and training that incorporates football, we encourage girls to challenge the preconceived roles of women and educate them about their capabilities and freedom.
This project will empower young women and girls, allowing and encouraging them to explore their capabilities and rise out of the shackles of patriarchy, helping them reach their full potential in health and well-being. By equipping them with education, life skills, and confidence, the project will also enable these girls to become role models and change-makers in their communities, inspiring future generations to challenge inequality.
