Ending Child Marriage

By Julia Krepska | Founder and Director

It's been almost 6 months since we started our End to Child Marriage project and I am so pleased with the results! We have 46 girls attending our classes (although officially it was supposed to be 30) and 30 more are joining now, in a different location. Our main 31 girls are attending every day and the additional girls attend when they can - some can only attend for a couple of hours a day due to their families expecting them to work in the fields or in the house. We are however very happy that they are joining when they can. From December or January some will be joining regular school and some will be starting vocational training - we will be doing full assessment of their skills shortly. Those that will start regular school will still receive 2 hours a day of extra tuition with us, and those that will be starting vocational training will be receiving a financial literacy training from us.

Our staff are now doing a lot of community outreach work and this is going really well. They are delivering training sessions on issues surrounding child marriage, domestic violence and the importance of education. On average we are now training 100 community members a month. We are hoping to increase that number from January onwards.

In the meantime, our staff at the safe house have had to deal with some very difficult cases, the worst one probably being a 3 year old girl that was badly abused. She required a lot of medical and emotional support and was not safe in her community. She is now okay, in a lovely safe place in Kathmandu where our staff took her and ensured she is doing well. We will be monitoring her progress closely.

As always, thank you so much for all the support. We could never do this work without it. THANK YOU!
