Smallholder Farmers Lead Sustainable Land Use in Mbozi Village

By Francis Mbewe | Project Leader

In Mbozi Village, Vubwi District, Eastern Province, smallholder farmers are making a significant impact on sustainable land use and promoting high-quality seeds. These farmers, often working on less than 2 hectares of land, are crucial to local food security and environmental conservation.

Sustainable Practices.

Agroforestry: Integrating trees into their farming systems, enhancing biodiversity and soil health.
Conservation Agriculture: Adopting practices like minimal tillage and crop rotation to reduce soil erosion and improve fertility.
Efficient Water Use: Implementing techniques to optimize water usage, crucial in areas with erratic rainfall.
High-Quality Seeds
Improved Varieties: Accessing drought-resistant and high-yielding seed varieties, boosting crop resilience and productivity.
Seed Multiplication: Some farmers are trained in producing quality seeds, improving local seed availability and quality.
Impact
Environmental Benefits: Sustainable practices improve soil health, conserve water, and enhance biodiversity.
Economic Benefits: Higher yields and better crop quality increase incomes, improving livelihoods.
Food Security: Enhanced productivity ensures more food for local consumption and market.
