Looking into the journey of the Ikemele Women

By Oletilwe Molebatsi | Marketing and Fundraising Manager

Koketso
Koketso

A journey of a thousand steps begins with one step. Koketso, Queen and Keamogetswe take the first step in to a prosperous future through the Ikemele Women Empowerment

Koketso is a young mother who took on major responsibilities at home from an early age after her mother became ill and lost her job, and her father abandoned the family. She became the primary caregiver for her nine-year-old sister, placing significant emotional and financial strain on her household.

Determined to improve her situation, Koketso enrolled in Lesedi la Batho’s Computer Literacy programme and was later selected for the Ikemele Women Empowerment Programme. Through the programme, she built self-confidence, communication skills, and practical work readiness. Koketso has since graduated and secured employment as an Administrative Assistant, demonstrating how skills training and targeted support can transform lives and families.

Queen is a 28-year-old single parent raising a young boy. Coming from a disadvantaged background, she faced many challenges throughout her educational journey. She was discouraged by her boyfriend, who is also the father of her child, from continuing her education. He later left, forcing Queen to raise their son on her own.

Despite these hardships, Queen successfully graduated from a skills training programme at Lesedi la Batho, where she strengthened her skills and rebuilt her confidence. Although she continues to face unemployment and financial difficulties that make it hard to meet her daily needs, Queen remains motivated and hopeful. She is determined to improve her circumstances and create a better future for herself and her child.

Keamogetswe  single parent raising a three-year-old baby girl. Coming from a disadvantaged background, Keabetswe was unable to complete her schooling due tolack of family support, which made it difficult for her to find stable employment. As the sole provider, she struggled to meet her child’s basic needs. Keamogetswe was also experiencing family disputes and as a results moved out of the families main house to a back room shack in their yard provided by Lesedi la Batho as a means to remove her and her child from the toxic environment.Despite these challenges, she remained determined to improve her life, gain a new skill and graduated in December 2025 with the goal to create a better future for her child.

as they swore into the future may they be inspired to rise beyond their challenge to become the best versions of themselves
