The project Empowering Healthcare’s Future Through Innovation is progressing strongly, demonstrating FMIC’s leadership in integrating sustainable technologies into healthcare infrastructure. As of 2024, the project has implemented several impactful environmental initiatives addressing both energy and water challenges in Afghanistan—a country highly vulnerable to climate change and water scarcity.
Key achievements include:
Solar Hot Water System (2024): Generates 18,000 liters of hot water daily at 70°C, reducing the hospital’s diesel consumption by ~70,000 liters annually and avoiding ~200 tonnes of COe emissions per year. The system achieved full return on investment within one year.
Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion: In 2023, FMIC began treating 45m³ of wastewater daily. In 2024, an additional 120m³/day capacity was added. Treated water is now reused for landscaping, supporting 6,000 feet of drip irrigation for 1,200 trees and 7,000 m² of grass, conserving scarce potable water.
Solar PV Milestones: Building on the success of the 160 kW solar PV system installed in 2019, FMIC is now preparing to install a 1 MW solar photovoltaic plant in the second quarter of 2025. It is expected to reduce emissions by another 200 tonnes COe annually, with a return on investment in under five years.
These efforts not only reduce FMIC’s environmental footprint but also contribute to long-term operational efficiency and cost savings—setting a national example for climate-smart healthcare innovation in fragile settings.
While FMIC remains deeply committed to integrating environmental sustainability into healthcare delivery, it is important to acknowledge the complex realities we face. Operating in a fragile context, where a large proportion of our patients rely on the Patient Welfare Program for subsidized or free care, our foremost priority is often saving lives. As such, allocating significant resources to environmental infrastructure—despite its long-term benefits—can be extremely challenging.
Nevertheless, we believe that healthcare and sustainability should go hand-in-hand. We are doing our utmost to pioneer sustainable practices, but to expand and sustain these innovations, we rely on the generosity of partners and supporters who share our vision. With your support, we hope to not only continue this important work but also inspire other institutions in the region to follow a similar path—proving that even in the most difficult circumstances, green healthcare is both possible and essential.
