New venture about to begin!

By Julia Krepska | Founder and Director

We are so excited to tell you about our recent venture aimed at helping our families to become self-sufficient. We will soon be opening a plastic recycling centre - small scale venture at first with the aim of replicating the model to other parts of Province 2 (Madhesh Pradesh). We have been working on all the plans for the past few months and it looks like we will start realising them VERY soon! We have now found the land and will be ordering all the machines this month. After everything is set up we will be training our families and we’ll be ready to start. We will monitor everything closely and will expand the recycling centre as per need. We are all learning about plastic recycling – and there seems to be A LOT to learn! But the whole team is so excited so we cannot wait to start properly!

Our families are now starting their businesses making and selling bamboo furniture and jewellery, and from next month the families that we have trained in tailoring will have their own workshop set up. We are so happy for them.

Our 143 children are attending our classes, school and the library activities. And none of them have gone back to the brick factories to work. This is such a great achievement and I couldn’t be prouder of our team who work round the clock on the ground to ensure that all children are receiving education and their parents all the support they need to become independent.

We are continuing our investigations into other brick factories in the area and so far we have confirmed nearly 600 children who have been working full time. And this is just a drop in the ocean – we have many more factories to investigate in the district and beyond.

I am hoping to include more updates from the recycling centre in my next report – you will be able to see all starting from scratch. And hopefully we can create a great model that not only helps the families to bring income but also is a part of a wider environmental project, something very much needed in that part of Nepal.

Thank you so so much for all the support so far – without your help none of this would have been possible. We are hoping to continue to support more children and ensure that soon there are no more children working at brick factories. We would like all of them to gain education and have a proper childhood.

Thank you!
