We are sharing this update especially with the GlobalGiving community, a platform that has been an important pillar in the management and visibility of donations for this and other projects we carry out in coastal communities of the Gulf of California.
It is important to clarify that the progress shared here was made possible through funding from Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) and Resources Legacy Fund (RLF). We are sharing these results on GlobalGiving because they directly strengthen the goals of the project hosted on the platform and reflect the type of environmental and community impact we aim to generate.
During this period, 3,738 kilograms of abandoned fishing nets were recovered from communities along the Santa Rosalía–Laguna San Ignacio corridor. This material was classified and stored in a structure built at CRESCA, significantly improving handling and allowing us to move away from undesirable practices such as the incineration of monofilament nets.
One key lesson was the need to reduce the volume of recovered nets to make their management feasible in remote regions. In response, a community-based reduction process was developed that decreases the volume of monofilament nets by 80–90%, making storage easier and opening the door to functional uses in community spaces, such as durable public-use furniture.
This work involved the active participation of fishing communities, local authorities, and students and faculty from the Higher Technological Institute of Mulegé (ITESME), strengthening environmental awareness and hands-on learning around responsible marine waste management.
We sincerely thank GlobalGiving and everyone who takes the time to read and follow this work. Visibility, interest, and accompaniment are also a meaningful form of support and help us continue building local solutions to reduce marine pollution and protect our ecosystems.
