Clean water for 917 households Kenya

Better health - access to clean protected water sources mean a decrease in waterborne diseases. The families across these households have improved overall health and a reduction in medical expenses.

Better learning - This project brings better hygiene to 7 schools in the area with a healthier environemnt for students and staff leading to better school attendance and improved learning for the children.

Better productivity - access to clean water means not only do the children of these households do better at school, parents and adults are also more productive because they are more healthy.  This provides more opportunity for income generating and raising living standards.

Better for the environment - planting trees at the spring protection sites, strengthens ecosystem stability, prevents soil erosion and improves water retention.

Better social impact on communities - 

• Less time spent collecting water is having huges benefits for girls and women as they have more time for education both at school and in the community and also have more scope for leadership roles within the communities.
• Working together as a community making the spring protection a reality, is fostering stronger local networks and support and leads to other project for example - stove installations, community education workshops
• The learning and experience of managing their own water sources is building long-term resiliene to environmental and economic challenges brought on by climate change.

This report is from Shadrack Kipngeno - Senior Field Officer Health, and it is about Kimasian water spring protection scheme.

Spring protection is one among the several needs which has been identified by the communities.

Kimasian water spring is located in Kapsoit ward, Ainamoi sub county, Kericho county. Semi-Arid area and community members especially women and children walk long distance to fetch water and most beneficiaries are local subsistence farmers.

This spring is serving 951 households reaching out to 1,730 people (380Male, 450Female, 400Boys and 500Girls). Kiboibei primary school is one of the beneficiaries having a population of 280 students and teachers.

Before Kimasian water spring was protected, community members used to fetch and animals drank from the same pool hence prone to contamination of water by animals and storm water, which contributed waterborne diseases like typhoid.

Funding of the project involved 50 percent cost sharing aiding the sustainability of the spring. Project process involved site visit by BCW construction supervisor to check the viability of the spring, preparatory meeting with the community to enlighten the community on what resources to contribute and what BCW will contribute afterwards signing of contract. When all these are done and materials assembled they will do construction.

Water management Committee capacity building - this is a day of training which is conducted by Ministry of Health staffs to enlighten the committee on what measures to take to ensure the sustainability of the project. The topics covered in the training include: Project By-laws, Project Management, Roles of water management Committee, Leadership skill, Financial Management and Environmental health and Sanitation.
