The Journey of Community Care Homes
For many years, the Community Care Homes Project has provided a nurturing and stable environment for children and families across Taiwan facing hardship and uncertainty. At its heart, the project focuses on early intervention — stepping in before a family’s situation reaches crisis, to prevent separation and protect children from institutional placement. Working closely with local community partners, The Mustard Seed Mission built a network of small, home-like spaces where children could find safety, warmth, and belonging — places where family bonds could be restored and hope could quietly take root again.
Across twelve community-based care homes stretching from Yilan to Yunlin, every story reflects quiet but powerful transformation — proof that care, when rooted in community, can truly change lives.
In Miaoli, two children from a blended family lived under the weight of poverty, violence, and neglect. Their stepfather had just been released from prison, their mother was living with a disability, and one of the children bore the scars of abuse. When they entered the Community Care Home, they found stability and compassion for the first time. The caregivers not only provided safe shelter and daily care but also arranged medical treatment and connected the family to local resources. Through consistent attention and encouragement, the children began to heal — returning to school, laughing again, and reclaiming the sense of childhood they had nearly lost.
In Nantou, two siblings whose parents were repeatedly imprisoned for alcohol and drug offenses longed for something most take for granted — a safe place to call home. After years of instability and institutional care, they found belonging in a Community Care Home. Here, they rediscovered routine, warmth, and affection. Guided by caring adults, they learned to express themselves, build healthy relationships, and take pride in their studies. For them, the home became more than a place to stay; it became a second chance to grow, to be loved, and to believe in tomorrow.
These moments of change reflect what Community Care Homes truly stands for: early intervention, holistic support, and community-rooted care. Each home has served as both a refuge and a bridge — connecting children to education, mentoring, and long-term well-being, while helping families build the capacity to care again.
As the project reaches its closing chapter, the work and values it represents will continue through The Mustard Seed Mission’s existing child sponsorship program, “Sprouting Dream | Sponsor a Child in Taiwan.” This long-standing initiative extends the same holistic approach — focusing on emotional care, educational opportunities, and family empowerment — to ensure that children can continue growing within their own communities. It builds upon what Community Care Homes began: transforming care from a temporary shelter into a pathway of sustained support and hope.
To all our donors and supporters, thank you for standing with us throughout this journey. Your support has helped children move from uncertainty to stability and given families the strength to rebuild. The impact of the Community Care Homes Project will continue to grow — in every child supported, every family strengthened, and every community that has learned how care can truly change lives.
With heartfelt gratitude,
The Mustard Seed Mission Team
