From Trauma to Trust: Trust Starts Here

By Leslie Callejas | Assistant Director of Development

At a recent family planning event hosted by WINGS in the Chilasco community hall, an 18-year-old woman quietly approached one of our nurses. She had seen a poster about the event and, despite feeling nervous, decided to go. Her past included time in a juvenile detention center, a move to a new town, and a medical history that left her feeling different—and deeply traumatized. She shared that she has two uteruses and, after enduring multiple invasive exams, was afraid to seek care again.

The nurse explained that at WINGS, we don’t care about your age or background—we care that you’re here, and we’re here to help. We meet many women like her, carrying trauma from past experiences with the healthcare system. That’s why we make it a priority to ensure every woman who comes to us feels informed, respected, and empowered.

Family planning events like this one may seem simple—just another gathering at a community hall—but for many, they are a turning point. These conversations are often overlooked or avoided, yet they are essential. At WINGS, we remain committed to reaching every corner, opening the door to honest, compassionate conversations about reproductive health—because every woman deserves that chance.
