Farmers of the Future has been so busy to say the least! This program has absolutely taken off with a new, fresh vision for the participants and keeping engagement and goal setting at the highest it has been. In Quarter 2 alone, 710 seedlings have been planted and 35.78kg of vegetables have been harvested.
Taleo, one of our first and most dedicated farmers had such a big success this quarter. Farmers of the Future and Taleo are now represented at the local Farmers Market which happens once every month. Taleo was there selling his spinach and he sold out before the market even closed! This was such a huge accomplishment for his business and self-confidence when speaking to customers.
Additionally, we launched our new business training program, focusing specifically on developing the skills the participants need to create and run small businesses around farming. This has been received very well!
On the 17th, we welcomed our new participant Glorence. She hopes to learn skills necessary to start a creche where she can grow vegetables to supply meals for the students at her school.
Furthermore, we have been experimenting with organic pesticides, and happy to report some great success. We have some small mites and bugs that are eating the Spinach and when using the organic pesticides, we saw almost immediate results.
Finally, last week, we started to build a map for our gardens. We are doing this for two reasons; to use it as a crop rotation and growth monitoring tool, but also as part of our training course to use in Property Management and Design lesson modules. Check out the cool drone photos from our photography intern, Jack Borowiak that we will use to build our map!
In return, we have had such great progress with the farm and have a really clear direction for the business management side of the program. We are going to close this fundraising page and launch a new one in the next month announcing our new fundraising plans for the business side of the program as the farm is now almost self-sustainable!
We would not be able to get to a place we are today without incredible donors like yourself. Students are now thriving, we are tackling the youth unemployment rate, and creating such great opportunity for these youth and young adults. Thank you for all your continued support!
