A meal, A Chance at a Future

By Joshua Omondi | Project Leader

Project Summary

The “Feed a Child to Stay in School” initiative by Sheepcare Community Centre aims to provide daily nutritious meals to vulnerable and underprivileged children enrolled in our community school. Many of these children come from low-income households within the informal settlements of Nairobi, where food insecurity is a major challenge. By ensuring that each child receives at least one balanced meal a day, we are not only nourishing their bodies but also fueling their dreams and improving school attendance, concentration, and performance.

Project Achievements

During the last 4 months, we have seen the project make tremendous progress:

  1. Meals Provided:
Over 28,000 nutritious meals were served to more than 300 children across our Early Childhood, Primary, and Junior Secondary sections, both 10 O’clock porridge and Lunch.
  2. Improved School Attendance:
School attendance has increased by 38%, our teachers have noted that absenteeism due to hunger has drastically reduced.
  3. Improved Academic Performance:
Our teachers have reported improved focus and participation in class, especially during morning and afternoon lessons.
  4. Partnership Support:
Through your support on GlobalGiving, and local partnerships like KAPU Africa, we have been able to purchase key food supplies ;maize flour, rice, beans, cooking oil, and vegetables, ensuring meal consistency throughout the term.

Challenges Faced

While we have made progress, a few challenges persist:

  • Rising Food Costs: Inflation continues to impact the cost of essential commodities, limiting the number of meals we can serve.
  • Storage Capacity: Our current food store is small and not well-ventilated, making bulk storage difficult.
  • Limited Cooking Equipment: We rely on a single cooking stove, which slows meal preparation during peak times.

We are exploring ways to expand our kitchen facilities and partner with local donors to address these challenges.

Success Story:

Meet Blessing, a 10-year-old pupil in Grade 4.
Before joining the feeding program, Blessing often came to school on an empty stomach and would struggle to stay alert. Since the project began, she receives a warm plate of rice and beans every school day. Her teachers say she is now more attentive, confident, and performing better in class. Blessing’s smile tells the story of hope restored and it’s all because of the meals made possible by your support.

Next Steps

As we move into the next term in January 2026, our goals include:

  • Expanding the feeding program to reach 400 children daily.
  • Expanding the kitchen facility to limit the time wastage in preparation of the meals
  • Constructing an improved food storage unit.
  • Introducing a small kitchen garden to supplement meals with fresh vegetables.
  • Strengthening partnerships with local suppliers to ensure cost efficiency and sustainability.

Thank You

We extend heartfelt gratitude to all our donors, partners, and friends on GlobalGiving who make this program possible. Your contributions are not just filling plates, they are fueling education, hope, and transformation. Together, we can ensure that no child stays hungry or drops out of school because of poverty.
Thank you for being part of this journey of change.

With Gratitude
