Fighting for LGBTQ+ Rights in Africa

Around the world, June is recognised as Pride Month—a time to honour the resilience, beauty, and rights of the LGBTQ+ community. But across much of Africa, open celebration remains incredibly difficult. Legal, cultural, and social barriers still make it dangerous for many LGBTQ+ individuals to live openly, let alone gather or be seen.

Yet thanks to your support, this June was still something to be proud of.

With your help, we focused our efforts on what matters most: safe spaces. We worked quietly and thoughtfully to fund small gatherings, community group meetings, and secure venues where people could connect, speak freely, and feel seen—sometimes for the first time in a long time.

We provided modest support for things like transport to meeting points, small event catering, and security arrangements to ensure these spaces stayed protected. These weren’t public parades or festivals, but they were powerful all the same. They were spaces filled with laughter, shared stories, quiet strength, and moments of healing.

One attendee said, “This was the first time I’ve been in a room where I didn’t have to hide who I am. I didn’t know how much I needed that.”
