Art and Conservation!
We have been incredibly busy these past few months as we continue to support and accompany women entrepreneurs and eco-guides in Punta Arena, along with local school children and artists. Many thanks to Patricia Cesareo, who led a wonderful series of papier-mâché craft workshops. These workshops were designed to inspire participants and demonstrate the full creative potential of this versatile material, providing the women artisans and entrepreneurs of Punta Arena with fresh ideas for developing sustainable income streams.
We were also fortunate to have the invaluable support of volunteer students from ESMT Berlin throughout the entire month of April! This group of volunteers was amazing and helped Fundación Bahía staff optimize and organize administrative tasks. We are pleased and grateful to now have a brand new website! Please visit us at www.fundacionbahia.ngo. Thanks to the great ESMT volunteers, who not only facilitated English workshops for the women but also organized engaging activities at the IETB school in Punta Arena. There, they taught English through interactive games, promoting language learning in a community where tourism serves as the primary economic driver—making English an essential tool for local development.
As part of our mission to "promote the conservation and protection of marine-coastal ecosystems," we have made significant strides in developing the book "The Flora of Punta Arena," as well as the art exhibit that goes with it! Thanks to the dedication of volunteer students from the Fine Arts and Sciences University Institution of Bolívar (UNIBAC), working under the guidance of Professor Tere Perdomo in the Watercolor Workshop courses, we have now completed most of the illustrations for the 72 flora species identified and documented in the book. This publication is designed to enhance environmental education for young people while serving as a valuable resource for local women eco-guides. We were fortunate to bring together artists, scientists, and students from the local school with those from the Montessori School during a fantastic bird-watching session in March, followed by a watercolor session.
Our educational beach cleanup initiatives continue to raise environmental awareness while improving water quality in the bay and ocean around the Cartagena and Punta Arena communities. Through cleanup campaigns involving corporate volunteers and COJOWA students, we successfully collected 309 kg of regular waste and 152.08 kg of recyclable materials—preventing a total of 461.08 kg of debris from entering marine waters.
Throughout the remainder of the year, we remain committed to protecting marine-coastal ecosystems and empowering the women and children of the Punta Arena community. We invite you to join us and participate in this transformative mission!
