Children’s rights activist Marian Wright Edelman once said, “If you can’t see it, you can’t be it.”
For kids growing up in foster care, imagining a bright future can be difficult. Research shows that teens in foster care are less likely to graduate high school, attend college, or find stable employment compared to their peers—often because they lack the consistent support that families typically provide. While the odds may seem stacked against them, studies also show that having even one stable, caring adult in their life can make all the difference.
That’s exactly what Kidsave’s Houston Weekend Miracles program is all about—connecting older kids and teens in foster care with caring adults who can offer guidance, encouragement, and stability.
In August, the Houston Weekend Miracles team hosted its annual Career and Life Skills Day, a hands-on event designed to spark inspiration and show kids what’s possible for their future. Sixteen youth and nine families came together to explore 15 different career paths—from finance and engineering to journalism and healthcare.
At the event, kids practiced being news reporters, learned how air moves through the lungs with a respiratory therapist, and picked up valuable budgeting and credit tips from a banker. One of the most exciting moments was welcoming back Colonel Anne McClain, NASA astronaut and longtime Kidsave volunteer, who joined to share her experiences from her recent mission to the International Space Station.
“Our kids really light up at Career & Life Skills Day,” said Ashlee Evans, Houston Weekend Miracles Program Manager. “They love getting to try new things and explore different opportunities, but what makes it extra special is the chance to connect with our families, learning about their jobs, hobbies, and passions. It’s such a fun way to build relationships while opening doors for the future.”
Now in its third year, Career & Life Skills Day has become one of the most anticipated events for Houston Weekend Miracles—an uplifting reminder of what’s possible when caring adults show up for youth in foster care.
Events like Career & Life Skills Day remind us how powerful connection can be. When caring adults step forward, lives change — futures open up, and hope takes root. You can be part of that change. To help more kids in foster care build lasting relationships and see what’s possible for their future, consider making a donation or come and learn more about our Houston Weekend Miracles program. Together, we can make sure every child knows they matter and has someone cheering them on.
