Although our name is “The Lake Clinic,” we also care for people living along one of the major tributaries of the Tonle Sap Lake. The Steung Sen River begins in a mountainous region on the Thai–Cambodian border and follows a serpentine course through the provinces of Preah Vihear and Kompong Thom before emptying into the Tonle Sap Lake about 250 km to the south. The river provides both transportation and irrigation for the communities along its banks.
Like the Tonle Sap, the river is experiencing the negative effects of deforestation, increasing pollution from industrial and agricultural runoff, and climate change, which has altered its natural ebb and flow.
In nearly two decades of serving people along the river, we have seen considerable economic change and infrastructure development, together with a growing demand for healthcare and health education.
TLC’s outreach staff provide both health education and health screening to villagers in our target area. Health education helps people understand how to stay well by teaching good hygiene, proper nutrition, and how diseases spread. When people know more, they can take steps to protect themselves and their families, preventing many illnesses. Lessons are delivered in simple, accessible language so the whole community can learn easily and feel confident about staying healthy.
Health screening is also essential. It helps detect problems early, before they become serious. For example, screening can identify conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Early detection allows more effective treatment and can prevent serious complications later. This is especially helpful in remote areas where healthcare services are limited.
Thanks to generous donors like you, TLC’s outreach teams provide critical health education and screenings to villagers. These programs save lives by preventing illness and catching health issues early—especially in remote areas where medical services are limited. Your support helps us strengthen these vital services and improve health outcomes for some of Cambodia’s most vulnerable communities.
