ActionAid's Reach in Bangladesh

By Ehab Elsawaf | Deputy Director of Development

Thank you for your support of this project, I'm writing to share some updates about ActionAid's work in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh remains one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world, frequently hit by cyclones, floods, and other extreme weather events. In May 2024, Cyclone Remal slammed into the southern coastal districts, causing severe flooding and landslides that wiped out livelihoods and disrupted local economies. The devastation left many families struggling to recover. Then, in July 2025, heavy monsoon rains and a low-pressure system over the north Bay of Bengal triggered yet another wave of severe flooding across the country. Nearly every district in Bangladesh faced rising river levels and flash floods from upstream waters, displacing communities and worsening living conditions.

In response, ActionAid and its partners have been carrying out extensive humanitarian work, particularly in Noakhali, Feni, and Khagrachhari districts. Activites included psychosocial support, cash assistance, and distribution of dignity kits for women and girls, along with gender-based violence awareness and risk mitigation training. Cash-for-work programs helped families rebuild their livelihoods, while multipurpose cash grants and WASH interventions improved access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene. Across all interventions, to date, we have reach 124,320 people were reached — including 80,921 women and 35,386 men. Achievements include (but are not limited to):

  • 35,551 people recevied hot meals
  • 12,689 people benefitted from cash grants
  • 3,981 people benefitted from cash-for-work
  • 1,950 women received dignity kits

As always, ActionAid places a strong emphasis on women’s and youth leadership, ensuring that affected women and young people are not only recipients of aid but also leaders in the response. This inclusive and community-driven approach is helping Bangladesh build stronger, more resilient systems for future climate crises.

We appreciate your continued partnership during this time.
