Ending Hunger | A Community Giving Network

High up in Taiwan’s Lidao Village, Grandma Xiang leans over her rows of cabbages, her hands steady despite the lingering spring chill. As the main caretaker for her two grandchildren, she keeps their small world running with her crops, so her daughter can take temporary jobs outside the village to support them.

When Harvest Becomes a Burden

In March, a surge in cabbage harvests across Taiwan sent market prices crashing. Fields that should have meant security for Grandma Xiang and her grandchildren instead were mounted with unsold cabbages,each one representing another bill, meal, or school expenses. During a routine home visit, our case manager discovered their conundrum: acres of perfectly good cabbages with nowhere to go.

Instead of offering just one-time emergency cash relief, we decided to take a different approach. Through the LoveLife Center, a key part of our Ending Hunger | A Community Giving Network, we purchased 654 of Grandma Xiang’s cabbages to include in care packages for families in need. This way, the produce wouldn’t go to waste, while creating a solution that fosters a circle of care within the community.

Different Kind of Support

These cabbages left Lidao Village and became part of care packages that reached families across eastern Taiwan. They also made their way to tables at the Mustard Youth Home, bringing comfort to many who were facing their own challenges. What started as a potential disaster for one family became a source of nourishment for many others.

This is the heart of what the Ending Hunger program strives for: not only meeting needs but preserving dignity and turning them into connection. Grandma Xiang’s story isn’t just about being lifted up in a tough season; her labor became part of sustaining others. It’s a full-circle moment that proves even in vulnerability, there is power to uplift.
