Green Habits, Healing Hearts

By Miriam Kariuki | Project Coordinator

At Agatha Amani House, climate action is being lived out in everyday choices that promote healing for both people and the planet. This quarter the survivors gained practical knowledge and actively engaged in topics such as water conservation, sustainable waste management, and the power of permaculture farming. For instance, they took part in structured farm routines that emphasized soil regeneration through mulching, planting drought-resistant crops, and utilizing water efficiently, especially during irrigation in the early morning and late evening hours to minimize evaporation.

A highlight of this quarter has been the development and use of our composting system. Survivors now sort organic waste from their daily cooking and farm activities to feed into the compost bins. This system transforms food scraps, grass matter, and animal manure into rich, organic fertilizer that is used on the farm. Not only does this reduce our reliance on synthetic fertilizers, but it also significantly cuts waste sent to landfills. Survivors were able to witness firsthand the transformation of waste into something life-giving, mirroring their own journey of healing and renewal. This composting approach has become both a practical skill and a therapeutic process. As one survivor said, “Just like the compost changes, I feel like I’m changing too, stronger, more useful, more alive.” The act of tending to the compost and farm has reinforced the values of patience, care, and growth, fostering a deep sense of purpose and environmental stewardship.

We are proud of the small but powerful steps being taken toward a greener, more conscious way of living. These experiences are shaping survivors into environmental advocates who carry with them not only the tools for healing but also for sustainable living, long after they leave the shelter.
