We turn discarded microSD cards into powerful offline audio libraries for women in rural Rwanda - no internet, no electricity, no literacy required. Each reused card brings vital knowledge and hope to women living at the last mile.
In rural Rwanda, many women face multiple barriers: they may not read or write, have no internet access, and lack basic financial or health knowledge. These challenges trap them in cycles of poverty, dependency, and disempowerment. At the same time, millions of microSD cards sit unused in drawers and discarded devices in the Global North - a hidden resource with enormous potential. What if these cards could be repurposed to deliver vital audio knowledge to marginalized women?
We collect discarded microSD cards, securely erase them, and turn them into portable audio libraries. These are distributed to women's groups in Rwanda and can be played on basic phones or solar-powered speakers - fully offline, in the local language, Kinyarwanda. Each card can hold up to 2,200 hours of empowering content on important topics like women's health, family planning, mental health, (genocide) trauma recovery, digital financial literacy, and mobile money use.
One reused card can empower five women. With 3,000, we'll reach 15,000 - and prove a model that's scalable across the Global South. Local partners gain skills in tech reuse and data collection, laying the groundwork for ongoing, self-sustained educational outreach. But it's not just about women's empowerment. Each recycled card avoids 13 kg of CO and prevents e-waste. By turning forgotten tech into offline audio libraries in local languages, we create lasting impact for people and planet alike.
