At GWTC, we are committed to advancing women's economic empowerment in Afghanistan and beyond. Afghan women, many confined to their homes or small production spaces, continue to create clothing, jewelry, carpets, and food items but lack access to buyers. By equipping them with digital literacy and e-commerce skills, we can connect them to markets, enable dignified incomes, and provide sustainable solutions to the ongoing human and economic challenges they face.
Afghanistan is in the midst of a pressing humanitarian and economic crisis, a consequence of the current Taliban's governance. Women and girls are facing unprecedented bans and restrictions on their fundamental rights. Their once-thriving businesses now have limited options to generate revenue, sustain operations, and retain jobs. E-commerce, one of these options, is hindered by women's lack of digital literacy.
We need to provide women with one-on-one digital literacy for e-commerce. We have established a portal, www.madebyafghanwomen.com. We need to enhance the capabilities and features of the site, and most importantly, provide women with the necessary training, tools, and support to establish and run their online shops and enhance their business management and marketing skills.
Supporting digital literacy ensures that women entrepreneurs not only survive but thrive, driving sustainable development and economic transformation. Women gain financial stability, access global markets, and improve family well-being. Women's businesses sustain jobs and boost the economy. Women can gain increased decision-making power, gender equality, and leadership roles. Digital businesses thrive despite economic or political situations.
