Summary

46 children risk losing their future. On June 30th 2023, tragedy struck when a lorry lost control at Londiani junction, killing 52 people. Among them the sole providers for many families in our community including 13 families with school going children. These children can't attend school without paying fees and buying a uniform, costs these grieving families can no longer meet. Their lives changed forever, their children's education in jeopardy, at risk of a future trapped in a cycle of poverty

Challenge

For 26 boys and 20 girls life will never be the same again. They are dealing with grief, loneliness, and in dire need of financial support to continue their education. One family lost their mother leaving the grieving father and grandmother to care for 4 children with a small, irregular income that barely covers the cost of food. A family whose mother had already passed, lost their father in the accident leaving the eldest boy to look after his 4 siblings. They cannot afford food and rent.

Solution

These families, with drastically reduced incomes, are struggling to afford basic essentials like food and a roof overhead leaving no funds to cover school. Education breaks the poverty cycle. For their children - 5 are in pre-school, 13 in Primary, 21 in Secondary, 5 at College and 2 are waiting for college - bursaries to cover school fees are the solution. Schools use fees to provide additional teachers to meet the number of students. Children are not allowed to school without fees and uniform.

Long-Term Impact

For the boy forced to leave college to look after his 4 siblings, bursaries will secure their future & give him hope to return to college and finish his nursing diploma. For the father watching his girls miss school each month because he can't afford sanitary pads, bursaries mean his children and continue their education un-interrupted. Todays children are the future of Kenya - nurses, teachers, business owners who with education can develop resilience, independence and break the poverty cycle.
