Last month we were able to start a simple hydroponics project with the help of our friends from the Hilton Hotel. Many hydroponics projects are expensive to set up, require a lot of investment and the maintaining of them can be difficult.
Our gardeners at the Hand to Hand Foundation garden are mainly people who have never been to school and have very poor, if any literacy and numeracy skills. This means that projects we do must be easy to implement and maintain. Our new hydroponics project uses white foam boxes with holes cut in the lids to support the plants. The boxes are filled to the right level with water and this level is maintained daily.
To launch the project, the staff at the Hilton hotel grew the seedlings to give us a good head start. Once this crop is harvested and eaten we will be germinating new seeds in foam pieces to grow the next lot of seedling.
Simple, cheap and effective!
