Families in Gaza continue to suffer from violence, nonstop evacuation orders and arbitrary aid restraints. On May 21st, the borders opened to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza for the first time after 11 weeks of complete blockade that started on March 2nd, 2025. However, a few hundred aid trucks carrying only flour have entered Gaza. This, in the words of the United Nations Relief Chief, is only a “drop in the ocean” for two million people of Gaza.
As aid slowly trickles into Gaza, the focus remains on basic survival: food, water, and shelter. Families remain dependent on community kitchens serving a single meal a day, typically a dish with only one or two ingredients, such as lentils or rice.
Between the chaos and strife, displaced families in Gaza must end their day with the sun, as they lack any access to light sources or electricity. Yet, there are many needs that do not end with the day. Going to the bathroom, fetching water, and childcare or caring for the sick/injured are common nighttime tasks that must be done in total darkness.
At Rebuilding Alliance, we have a plan to change that: Solar Lights. Our challenge? Aid regulations. Hundreds of thousands of solar lights wait in our warehouse in Amman for clearance from the Israeli Army. We are looking into the regulations that seem designed to stunt any aid that goes beyond the bare necessities. As soon as the borders are open for aid, we will organize shipments either from Port Jordan Aqaba or Port Ashood.
