Gender-based violence is rife in Alexandra, so we are grateful for your help in partnering with us to restore the lives of those impacted individuals. With support from people like you, and others, we have been able to walk the road with people who have been victims of GBV.
Our team of social workers receive referrals from the police station or the local clinic and after an initial counselling session, they take the person home and decide whether it is safe for them to stay there, or if they should be placed in a safe-house shelter or with a relative. But this is only the start of the journey, which involves ensuring that the case is reported, that the court appearance happens, and that the victim receives justice (although sadly this doesn't happen often enough).
We are very excited to have just recruited a GBV Co-ordinator who's primary role is to educate the community on their rights and responsibilities, from school children to the police, clinics to community leaders. This is a big step forward in the fight against GBV in Alexandra.
Thank you for caring enough to support people who have suffered but who with the right help, can be restored again and move on to help others.
