Ghana Scholars: Bright Futures

Dear GEC friends and supporters,

We’re excited to share a recent milestone from our ChangeMaker Program, part of the Bright Futures for Ghanaian Scholars initiative.  Recently, our students engaged in an immersive learning experience at the Ghana National Service Secretariat (NSS) Farm in Papao, Accra. The farm offers practical training for graduates completing their one-year mandatory national service, especially those pursuing careers in agriculture and related fields. Over the years, it has played a vital role in nurturing talent—many of its alumni are now prominent figures in Ghana’s agricultural landscape.

The farm, which specializes in crops, fisheries, poultry, piggery, and rabbitry, serves as a training ground for new graduates venturing into agriculture. The objective for this event was to provide our students with hands-on experience in agriculture, promote teamwork, and instill valuable work ethics.

Through a full day of volunteer work, our students joined service personnel in real-world farm tasks—collecting eggs, caring for rabbits and piglets, feeding fish, and even assisting with vaccinations for baby animals!

This wasn't just about the farm work—it was about larger life lessons as well. The students learned directly from long-time farm manager Mr. Cyril Tetteh, whose guidance brought the world of agriculture to life. He opened their eyes to career paths in agribusiness, sustainable farming, and livestock management, while reinforcing critical values like hard work, discipline, and innovation.  This experience challenged our students to push themselves in new ways, built confidence, and inspired new possibilities. 

This visit is part of our broader mission to develop civic-minded, innovative leaders. And thanks to your generous support, we’re able to expose our students to new fields, new ways of thinking, and real-world skills that prepare them for the future.

Dear Valued Supporters,

We’re excited to update you on our recent efforts to strengthen the partnership between families, educators, and the Ghana Educational Collaborative (GEC) program by expanding and enhancing our family engagement programming. We want to highlight a recent parent meeting hosted by GEC and Matie Masie.  This was a gathering designed to foster collaboration and enhance student success. Our goal was to provide parents with key academic updates, practical strategies for supporting their children at home, and insights on how we can collectively guide students toward brighter futures. We believe that working in partnership to support the GEC scholars is crucial for the long-term success of the students and families.  When families and community members are involved in student learning, students improve their academic performance and gain a stronger support system, helping them feel more confident at school. 

The meeting was led by our program coordinators, who are also alumni of the GEC program.  They shared GEC’s vision and aspirations for the year ahead. They reviewed students’ academic performance from the previous term, highlighted key trends, and shared teacher feedback. We also discussed students’ transition to college, outlining the support available to students preparing for this important step in their educational journey. Additionally, parents were briefed on upcoming vacation classes for double-track students, which are designed to supplement their learning and strengthen their academic foundation.

To further empower parents, we introduced practical strategies they can implement at home to support their children’s academic progress. Some topics discussed were ways to encourage daily routines, promote regular reading, and use educational tools and resources. Parents were also encouraged to actively engage in their children’s learning by asking questions, discussing school topics, and supporting the goals their children set during recent sessions with GEC. Finally, we provided updates on the parents' grant application process and gathered feedback to improve future applications.

By fostering open communication and active engagement between families and schools, we are building a stronger foundation for our students’ long-term success. Thank you for your continued support, which allows us to offer meaningful programs that impact our students, their families, and communities. Together, we are shaping the next generation of leaders!
