From Mentorship to Meaningful Futures: Girls and Teen Mothers Leading Change

By Paul Odalo | Monitoring and Evaluation Officer

In partnership with Shining Hope For Communities (SHOFCO), 57 adolescent girls gathered to talk about issues that shape their daily lives: drug abuse and social media. The conversations were not lectures, but spaces where the girls’ voices, experiences, and hopes guided the discussion.

Facing the Reality of Drug Abuse

The girls explored what leads young people into drugs, which included peer pressure, curiosity, stress, and lack of guidance. They spoke openly about what they see in their neighborhoods and schools. Together, they listed the dangers drugs bring: broken trust at home, lost opportunities, and health problems.

“I didn’t know that even being around people who use drugs can put me at risk. I will now be more careful about who I spend time with.”

Making Social Media Work for Us

Phones and social media are part of their daily lives. The girls admitted the pressure to copy influencers and trends. But through guided discussions, they weighed the good; learning, connection, inspiration—against the harm of imitation and comparison.

“We like TikTok, but now we understand not everything there is real. We will think first before trying what we see.”

 What Changed

  • 85% of the girls promised to stay alert in their surroundings and make healthier choices.
  • Many said they would support friends who may be tempted by drugs or unsafe online trends.
  • They left with confidence that their voices matter in shaping their own futures.

For 20 young mothers, mentorship became a stepping stone into action. Their journey led them to Kilifi College of Accountancy, where they began six months of vocational training in hospitality, hairdressing, and beauty. Their excitement was clear:

"I never thought I would sit in a college classroom. Now I feel hopeful. This is my chance to create a better life for me and my child,” one mother said with joy.

With a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in place, The Mango Tree will continue to walk alongside them, monitoring their progress, offering support, and celebrating every milestone.

Why It Matters

  • Equips teen mothers with employable skills for self-reliance.

  • Restores dignity and confidence after years of stigma and setbacks.

  • Builds pathways to economic empowerment and stronger families.

Conclusion

The journey of these girls and young mothers shows what happens when knowledge, confidence, and opportunity come together. From open conversations on drug abuse and social media to the bold step of enrolling in vocational training, they are proving that they are not defined by their challenges but by their determination to rise. With continued partnership, more girls can move from mentorship to meaningful futures—where they stand as role models, providers, and changemakers in their communities.

Your continued support helps more girls move from mentorship to meaningful futures. Together, we are not just changing stories; we are shaping generations.
