A brilliant few months in the schools with construction continuing in the college and further construction due in our satellite college in the hills. The students have been busy with recycling projects with old tyres and we have placed a local teacher in San Rafael with further support in La Pintada and Barbasco.
As part of the course the students have to provide adult literacy classes in the surrounding rural areas and these classes commence this month for the school year. This part of the program has been a resounding success over the years as more and more adults now believe that reading and writing does indeed help in the long-term for themselves, which means they are more likely to want their children to become educated as well rather than working in the fields or at home.
Plans are afoot to add more local teachers from 2019 in different rural communities by providing recently graduated teachers the chance to gain experience in the schools, whilst aiming to reduce the teacher/class ratio, which currently is one teacher for three classes, so they will be able to secure long-term jobs in the future. Without the education that you, our donors provide each year, this wouldn’t be possible and we thank you all.
Our annual Seven Continent Charity Challenge #4 which raises funds for all our projects across Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador and Perú was a huge success in May, biking, kayaking, hiking and “volcanoing” our way to Lake Atitlán in Guatemala, covering over 75kms. There is still time to support the cause by donating to this page and thank you!
A date for your diary for 2019: The Seven Continent Charity Challenge #5 will be the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu in Perú from 27-31st May – please contact us if you are interested on dom@thephoenixprojects.org . There are limited spaces so please let us know as soon as you can!
Have a fantastic June and we’ll be in touch in August with another update! Cheers
