Thanks to your generosity, this past August, 39 RKF bright young scholars came together in Kisumu for a four-day workshop that sparked friendship, self-belief, new dreams and the values guiding their education. What began as a workshop became a turning point-where quiet voices found courage and confidence took root. It became a space where mentors fostered honest conversations, nurtured confidence, and ensured every scholar felt seen.
From Hush to Hooray
The 2025 cohort arrived shy and reserved, but a thoughtfully planned week sparked remarkable transformation.
A day dedicated to bonding at Impala Park set the tone. Scholars teamed up for a lively scavenger hunt, laughing and strategizing together as they explored the park. Over a simple lunch of vegetable pie and soda added to the fun, sparking shared jokes and first-time tastes. Later, a spirited Jenga match encouraged relaxed conversation, and a joyful boat ride on Lake Victoria left the group with lasting memories and a deep sense of belonging.
Dream Boards, Debates, and Big Ideas
Building on this foundation, scholars dove into activities that blended creativity, self-discovery and inspiration. Vision board sessions invited them to map out their dreams and commit to new habits.
Alpha shared, “I want to have a family of my own like this one, one day.”
“I will stick this in my room so that every morning I am reminded of what I am working towards.” - Doreen
Through these reflections, Scholars reconnected with their goals, visualized concrete steps, and gained courage to share their aspirations openly.
Debates and story-building exercises added energy and laughters. Together, they tackled two motions; “Should students choose their careers based on passion rather than academic performance?” and “Should parents guide their children’s career choices because they have more experience?”
“It was my first time participating in a debate, and I want to try it out when I go back to school.” - Mary
These exchanges helped Scholars learn that their voices matter and that learning can be both playful and powerful.
Career Guidance & Inspiration
Career guidance sessions with Ms. Leticia offered practical tips and perspectives: how to set academic goals, choose subjects aligned with career paths, and explore future opportunities, even abroad. Scholars debated the merits of stability versus high-risk career options, reflecting on what truly fuels ambition and resilience.
Later, interactive talks with professionals, a baker, a farmer, a nurse consultant, and an actor brought inspiration to life. Ombuti, the actor, reminded scholars, “Life is not linear; challenges are opportunities to learn and grow,” while other professionals shared advice on persistence, adaptability, creativity, and balance.
The Crowd’s Favourite: Cook-out Challenge & Movies
The week’s favourite moments came during hands-on challenges. In the Cook-Out Challenge, four teams raced to prepare meals with a surprise ingredient. The kitchen buzzed with laughter. Chapatis flipped, pans sizzled, and teamwork shone, even when some teams scrambled to catch up.
Infused with the Dream Career Obstacle session, which invited reflection that made scholars pause to consider their “spark”, what drives them, what might have dimmed it, and how to reignite it. Brian shared, “My spark was dimmed by pride when I rejected advice, even after performing well.” Mapping these reflections and sharing openly created deeper self-awareness and peer support.
The lighter moments of the week were just as meaningful. A trip to the cinema to watch Fantastic Four reinforced themes of unity, family, and teamwork. Naomi reflected, “Family isn’t just blood, it’s also those who stand with you,” while Shadrack added, “I learned not to let anyone push me into something I don’t want to do.” For many scholars, it was their first cinema experience, a memory they’ll treasure for years.
The workshop concluded with a reflective and celebratory session that included parents and alumni. Discussions focused on accountability, mentorship, and academic support. Rebecca, a recent high school graduate, encouraged scholars: “The greatest loss one can experience in life is the loss of their potential,” inspiring teamwork, consultation with teachers, and the development of purposeful study habits.
The week ended with a trophy ceremony, celebrating top performers, most improved scholars, and those who showed exceptional participation and teamwork. Cheers, applause, and beaming smiles marked the fitting close to a week full of growth, connection, reflection, and joy.
Reflections & Next Steps
This workshop reaffirmed a simple truth: connection fuels achievement. When Scholars feel seen and supported, their confidence and grades rise.
While 60% of scholars saw academic improvement, others maintained their grades, and a few experienced slight declines, particularly in Mathematics and Science. To bridge this gap, alumni-led tutoring sessions are planned for the November–December break, ensuring each Scholar continues to thrive.
Together, We Go Further
Each vision board is more than just pictures on paper; it’s a roadmap to the future. Your continued support keeps these dreams alive, helping each Scholar grow not only academically but also in courage, gratitude, and purpose.
