HART support the 5 freedoms for animals

By Cheryl Martin | Regional Director

Dear Fellow Animal Lovers,

Vaccination and neutering programmes are crucial in reducing the risk of rabies. The HART team have continued to carry out their vaccination clinics with great success as well as providing support for animals who are injured or in distress. HART also run a school education programme which has got off to a great start in the new Nepali school year.

Do you know the five freedoms for animals? Organisations such as HART promote these freedoms and model them to the community. They are;

  1. Freedom from hunger and thirst
  2. Freedom from discomfort
  3. Freedom from pain, injury or disease
  4. Freedom to express normal behaviours
  5. Freedom from fear and distress

If you follow HART’s facebook page you will regularly see stories of when the team have supported animals to achieve these freedoms, dogs who have been injured or are ill and given care and support to recover.

HART continue their fantastic work in Pokhara. The team work tirelessly to care for dogs. Here’s a reminder of what they do;

  • dog population census
  • yearly mass anti-rabies vaccination
  • sterilisation(catch, neuter, vaccine and return)
  • community questionnaire survey
  • mobile neutering clinics
  • rescue with community involvement
  • collaborative working

Education is the key to change and HART continue their education programme in schools. Anjani HART’s communications officer, regularly visits  schools to run student workshops. This programme focuses on students respecting and caring for animals and being aware of issues such as rabies. It is always well received by the students.

This education programme compliments the camps that the HART team run. The team have continued their work in a variety of areas in Nepal. They set up camp and vaccinate and neuter as many dogs as they can and at the same time, treat any of the animals where necessary.  This protects both the animals and the communities. For example in Hetaunda recently, 175 dogs were vaccinated against rabies It has been a thorough and energetic effort by the whole team.

Sustainable Development Goal 3 addresses reducing health risks particularly in developing countries the work of HART in addressing the issue of rabies is commendable.

A big thank you to all donors who support the Hart programme. We are looking forward to supporting the team to continue their education programme in schools and provide important equipment for the team to ensure their job is done as effectively as possible.

Let’s help animals achieve their 5 freedoms!

With Love,

GVI Nepal Animal Welfare
