HART: Responding in Times of Crisis

By Hannah Westcott | Program Manager

Dears Supporters,

As we all grappled with lockdown and disruptions due to the global pandemic, the team at HART in Nepal were able to think quickly and proactively to ensure they were still able to provide key support safely.

The impacts of Covid-19 are far reaching, with the whole country of Nepal remaining in Lockdown for over 2months. Many essential services also ceased in the interests of public safety and disease control.

Despite the lockdown orders, HART staff continued to receive distress calls from the local community about injured and sick animals. After gaining approval of local authorities, the team were able to work in a very reduced capacity, often triaging over the phone and providing veterinary telehealth.

A large awareness campaign was also started, encouraging the local community to care for and leave food out for the many community animals, who rely on people to leave food scraps or plates of rice at their shop front or door step. As virtually no one was moving around outside in the community the rate of injuries from cars or motorcycles requiring surgery were quite low. Scheduled neutering and vaccination camps were postponed meaning that the later half of the year will be jam packed for all the staff involved.

Construction  work on a new, larger and more equipped work site for HART was also halted during this time. However in recent weeks a border fence and base internal structure has started to take shape. The new site will house more injured animals in large kennel spaces, allowing adequate rehabilitation until they are able to return home.

Your donations make all of this work possible.  A small donation can purchase a vet wrap that helps a dog recover from injury more effectively, or medication that decreases pain for the animal following treatment. Staff training is so important and can lead to improved outcomes for the animals and we were pleased to be able to offer this opportunity for the staff.  All goes towards improving the lives of animals in Nepal.

With Gratitude,

Nepal Vets
