HART initiatives

By Maisie Mayne | Fundraising intern

To our lovely supporters,

The Himalayan Animal Rescue Trust (HART), established in 2010, is a non-profit organization committed to enhancing animal welfare across Nepal. Operating primarily from their center on Shital Marg, Titepani 17, Pokhara, HART offers veterinary and animal rescue services, focusing on dogs. Their mission is to create communities where animals are respected, cared for, and free from disease and distress.

HART employs a systematic approach to control the dog population through neutering programs in Pokhara and Chitwan. Utilizing Animal Birth Control (ABC) techniques, free-roaming dogs are captured, evaluated, sterilized, treated for ailments, and released back into their original territories. This method ensures the population remains at a level acceptable to the community, reducing the need for culling and promoting healthier animal communities. Recognising the public health risks posed by rabies, HART has implemented mass vaccination campaigns. In Pokhara, data indicates that 91% of free-roaming dogs have been vaccinated against rabies, surpassing the 70% threshold necessary to control and eventually eliminate the disease.

Community involvement is pivotal to HART’s success. The organization collaborates with local authorities, village leaders, and social workers to address animal welfare concerns. Educational initiatives inform the public about responsible pet ownership, the importance of neutering, and rabies prevention. For instance, in Bharatpur, HART partnered with the Public Health Office to conduct mass anti-rabies vaccination programs, vaccinating 23% of the dog population in initial efforts. HART extends its services to remote regions through specialized camps. In collaboration with the Himalayan Mutt Project, HART conducted neutering and treatment camps in the Manang area, a region over 3,000 meters above sea level near the Nepal-Tibet border. Despite logistical challenges, the team successfully neutered and vaccinated 158 dogs, showcasing their dedication to improving animal welfare in hard-to-reach areas.

Since its inception, HART has made significant strides in animal welfare across Nepal. Their comprehensive programs have led to stabilized dog populations, reduced incidence of rabies, and increased community awareness about animal care. The organization’s data-driven approach ensures that interventions are effective and resources are utilized efficiently. The Himalayan Animal Rescue Trust continues to be a cornerstone in promoting animal welfare in Nepal. Through their multifaceted programs, community engagement, and unwavering commitment, HART addresses immediate animal health concerns while fostering sustainable, long-term solutions. Ongoing support from donors, volunteers, and local communities remains essential to the expansion and success of these vital initiatives.

Thank you!
