Palorinya Refugee Settlement in northeast Uganda is home to some 128,000 refugees, mostly from South Sudan. IsraAID has delivered protection programs tailored to Palorinya's unique challenges since the settlement's establishment in 2016. We focus on strengthening community-based responses, ensuring both refugees and the host community have the resources they need to navigate complex protection issues.
Malnutrition is a critical issue in the area, affecting nearly 31% of children with stunting – significantly higher than the global average of 22%. This reflects a growing global concern as climate change jeopardizes food security worldwide.
Inspired by our successful nutrition program in neighboring Kenya, IsraAID Uganda recently launched our first Public Health program to improve child malnutrition rates. In Kenya, we screened over 4,400 children, identifying nearly 10% as malnourished and referring them for treatment. We have adopted a similar community-based approach in Uganda to educate communities about malnutrition, normalize screening, and promote hygiene practices. We are also working with trusted local partners to identify and refer severe cases and conduct follow-ups to ensure sustained support for affected families.
Bringing together our global and regional expertise with local knowledge and resources, we’re proud to be embarking on this new program. From addressing malnutrition in Kenya and Uganda, to providing women’s health care in conflict-stricken Ukraine, we are committed to helping communities all over the world maintain their right to health in a way that is both sustainable and impactful.
