Last month, severe landslides triggered by heavy rainfall devastated the villages of Moror and Chesongoch in Elgeyo Marakwet County, western Kenya. The disaster claimed 40 lives, left dozens injured, and destroyed critical infrastructure including roads and bridges. Over 800 people were displaced from their homes, seeking safety at the Chesongoch Primary School Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp. With families cut off from essential services and fearful of further landslides, the need for immediate, targeted humanitarian support was critical.
IsraAID Kenya quickly deployed to the affected area to address urgent gaps in protection and hygiene. Recognizing that children are often the most vulnerable in crowded displacement settings, our team focused on restoring their dignity and preventing disease. We distributed 400 comprehensive hygiene kits, including essentials like soap, toothbrushes, solar torches for safety at night, and sanitary supplies for adolescent girls.
Beyond physical needs, the psychological toll of this disaster has been immense. Families are grappling with the sudden loss of loved ones, their homes, and their sense of safety. To support the community’s mental health, we trained 12 local frontline responders - including health workers and community leaders - in psychological first aid. These responders are now actively deployed in the IDP camp and local hospitals, providing vital support to help survivors process their grief and trauma.
More than a month since the landslides, significant gaps remain, particularly the lack of safe spaces for children and insufficient nutritional support for those under five. IsraAID is committed to staying on the ground to monitor these needs and support the community's long-term recovery. Your continued generosity allows us to remain agile and responsive, ensuring that we can help the people of Chesongoch rebuild their lives with resilience.
