Dear Supporter,
GVI Fiji is proud to annouce that we have increased rainwater harvesting capacity in the drought prone central Yasawas by almost 1,000,000 litres!
A Brief History
GVI Fiji launched the ‘Wi Ni Bula’ water security project in the central Yasawa Islands in June 2011 aiming to assist communities to increase access to safe drinking water through rainwater harvesting.
Though a popular tourist destination, the Yasawas Islands, are highly vulnerable to climate change and associated water and food security issues – due to limited groundwater and poor natural water catchment. During the increasingly intense dry season, there have been times when large scale government interventions have been required to ensure that communities have sufficient access to safe drinking water.
GVI’s 2011-2014 initiative in the northern Yasawa region systematically increased rainwater harvesting capacity of communities through the provision of new infrastructure and the improvement of existing infrastructure. Along side construction focused operations run in collaboration with local youth groups, GVI’s volunteers ran workshops to raise awareness and increase community’s capacity to safely manage collection infrastructure and store drinking water.
Our Impact
Over the course of three years, GVI installed over 40 new Rainwater harvesting systems and carried out repairs and improvements to 82 existing systems. The impact of the project has been decidedly significant in relation the overall effect on the profile of region. The total permanent rainwater harvesting holding capacity added by this 3 year initiative is estimated to be a cumulative 904,900 liters. The project has directly impacted approximately 2,000 people across the ten communities and 2 schools.
Thank you for supporting this project as this result would of not have been possible without your support!
All the best
