Hello Friends,
Over the past three months, activity along the Mathare River has focused on consolidation and consistency. While there have not been any major new developments during this period, the steady, ongoing work of the community has continued to make a meaningful difference.
Our Kenyan partners have maintained regular clean-up activities along the polluted stretch of the river, working alongside local youth and women’s groups to prevent further build-up of refuse and plastic waste. This consistent presence is vital — it helps to deter illegal dumping, keeps previously cleared areas from reverting back to landfill conditions, and reinforces community ownership of the restored space.
The waste sorting and recycling efforts are also continuing. Plastic collected from the riverbanks is still being separated and directed into recycling streams wherever possible, preventing it from flowing downstream toward the Indian Ocean. Organic waste continues to be repurposed, and the small-scale recycling and reuse initiatives remain operational, supporting both environmental outcomes and modest livelihood opportunities.
Importantly, the reclaimed areas are being maintained as usable community space. Families are continuing to make use of the safer, cleaner environment, and small-scale growing activities are ongoing, contributing to local food resilience.
This phase of the project is about strengthening foundations — embedding good waste management habits, reinforcing local leadership, and ensuring that earlier gains are protected. Sustainable transformation takes time, and maintaining progress is just as important as launching new initiatives.
As always, we are deeply grateful for your continued support. Your commitment enables this steady, community-led work to continue, protecting the Mathare River and improving everyday life for the people who live alongside it.
With thanks until the next update.
Leigh
