In Taiwan, more children with severe neurodevelopmental disorders experience abuse, neglect, are separated from family, and are institutionalized by the Taiwan government in nursing homes or long-term medical facilities, usually populated by the elderly. The Taiwan Love and Hope International Charity is running two of the first ever group home in Kaohsiung, Taiwan that adheres to a family-based model of care. Children experience the enjoyment of family life and a supportive community.
Taiwan will become a super-aged society by 2026. Charitable funding efforts are currently focused on the elderly population. Unfortunately, Taiwan also has a growing number of neglected and abandoned children with severe neurodevelopmental disorders. Abandoned children are institutionalized in elderly nursing homes as young as 2 years old. All of these children are survivors of family physical and sexual abuse as well.
The organization is running a flagship family-based model of care group home that can accommodate four children with special needs until they are 18.
1) Children with special needs when pulled out of an elderly nursing home have a better life expectancy and opportunity to receive prioritized healthcare management services; 2) Placing them in a child-friendly environment that addresses their unique developmental needs create better opportunities for rehabilitation and positive development; 3) We have a flagship home that provides a loving environment to children diagnosed with psychiatric and genetic illnesses; 4) Evidence-based approaches.
