The Hand to Hand foundation is currently caring for 24 children who have suffered from sexual abuse and neglect and we work together with local police, social welfare and doctors to help children recover and prosecute offenders. The proceeds from this years bike ride will enable us to purchase anotomically correct male and female dolls to assist children with disclosure of abuse. Riders are aged 4yrs(32KM) to 62 yrs (600km) and we will ride for 16 days in November from 2nd- 17th around Pattaya.
The number of children sexually abused in Thailand each is estimated to be more than 700 000, however the reality is much higher as less than 20% of cases are reported. Most children who have been submitted to sexual abuse are often reluctant to tell trusted adults or police about what happened to them as they simply do not have the vocabulary to explain what happened to them, they fear they will not be believed or punished for disclosing the situation.
The Hand to Hand Foundation is working with A21 to produce over 100 anatomically correct doll sets so that children can use this tool to show and describe what has happened to them through play to police, social welfare officers and NGO staff who assist children in these situations. The proposal to use this tool has already been extensively shared with law enforcement and social welfare departments and they are enthusiastic about receiving both the dolls and training.
Giving children a way to disclose the abuse they have suffered will have a great impact upon the number offenders who can be prosecuted and convicted. The video of role play with the dolls will be admissible as evidence in the courts and this will give the police and judges more information to lay serious charges and punishment. As offenders are prosecuted and convicted they will be unable to reoffend as they serve lengthy jail time.
