The Challenge: A Lifelong Burden of Spinal Disease
Spinal conditions in Afghanistan do not discriminate by age. Whether it is a child with a congenital deformity, a young laborer suffering from a traumatic work injury, or an elderly patient with degenerative disc disease, the lack of specialized care leads to a lifetime of paralysis, chronic pain, and economic dependency. For the indigent, these conditions are often a "death sentence" for their livelihoods. FMIC stands to address this exact lack of specialized tertiary services for all Afghans.
FMIC: A Catalyst for Systemic Change across All Ages
FMIC has transitioned from its pediatric roots into a multidisciplinary center of excellence serving the entire population. We provide a full continuum of spinal and orthopedic care backed by:
Multidisciplinary Expertise: Our team of Afghan and international professionals handles complex spinal cases for both pediatric and adult patients.
Advanced Diagnostic Infrastructure: We utilize state-of-the-art MRI, CT, and digital radiology to ensure precise surgical planning for complex spinal interventions.
Proven Surgical Success: FMIC has performed over 59,000 surgeries to date, including high-stakes procedures that restore mobility and independence.
International Standards: As the first hospital in Afghanistan to achieve both SafeCare and ISO certification, we provide world-class safety for every patient, regardless of age.
Breaking the Cycle of Poverty and Disability
The goal of this project is to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent a father from returning to work or a child from walking to school. Our Patient Welfare Program is the engine that makes this possible:
$62 Million in Impact: We have utilized over $62 million USD to subsidize care for those who cannot afford it.
850,000 Lives Touched: Nearly 850,000 patients have received life-changing treatments through our welfare fund.
Equitable Care: We ensure that the most vulnerable members of society receive the same high-quality, innovative care as any other patient.
Why Your Support Matters
By funding "Heal Spines – Heal Future," you are investing in the long-term human resource capacity of Afghanistan. Restoring a patient’s spinal health means restoring their dignity and their ability to contribute to their family and community. As we approach our 20th anniversary in April 2026, we remain committed to "reaching the unreached" and ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible even in the most fragile settings.
